Sigh. That habit was easy to break. So much for the once a week on a Sunday rundown posting. It was nice while it lasted
I do have progress on a number of fronts to post, but not this post. I’m going to be doing something familiar to anyone who reads this blog. I’m getting a new wheel. I’ll be picking her up in (wait for it) MDSW. She’s a Schacht-Reeves 24” double treadle in Cherry. I lurve cherry and the observant will have noticed a recent trend around here from single to double treadles. With the bum right ankle and the bad left foot, a single treadle no longer cuts it. Neither foot is worse than the other, so a single isn’t really an option. While both the Reeves and the old Matchless were large single treadles that I could put both feet on, it just isn’t the same. The two footed treadle motion is different than a double treadle. So there you have it, my rationale for swapping wheels.
What does this mean for the herd? Well, the Reeves 24” is looking for a new home.

As you can see, beyond the light layer of dust, she’s in excellent shape. 24” in Oak, large single treadle with the flyer on the left. There are three different whorls for the wheel, the extras screw onto storage on the underside of the bench. There is also the orifice hook stowed in the bench just in front of the wheel support.

One of the differences between the Reeves and the S-R version is the finishing details that Rick used. Instead of exposed screw holes, he plugged them with beautiful wood plugs throughout, this includes the drive wheel and where the treadle attaches to the treadle bar.

There are 5 large bobbins, two original Reeves and three that were recently made, as well as the bug style lazy kate. They all work beautifully. One of the originals has a notch missing from the edge, which you can see clearer here.

You can still cram a lot of fiber onto the thing. No, the pink singles don’t come with the wheel. I’ve since wound them off after being embarrassed at how very long they’ve been waiting to ply. I actually spun the first bobbin on the Reeves Frame wheel that I sold in August of ‘09. That explains the level of dust, n’est-ce pas?
Now the details. This wheel would be a pain to ship, so I’m looking for a local buyer (wheel is in NJ). I can deliver to a number of locations including the Clermont festival this week or the big one, MDSW. I’m asking $1,100 $1,050 for her. Once again a prolonged silence. I’ve been busy with work, family and still getting some hobby time. I also think I finally have the perfect traveling wheel.

My Bosworth Book Charkha. Go figure what with all the wheels I’ve purchased and sold over the years that this one has been in the herd since fall of 2002. Never really spent much time with it which is not surprising to anyone who knows how I feel about knitting with cotton. Last week I decided to try it again but used wool. It works! I’m sold. Charkha is going on the cruise next week

Charkha spun Shetland: 83 yards at 12 grams. Now that’s some fine arsed yarn
Have to get back to work. Just wanted to check in. Craft on!

I started the new job today. Most of it was spent in orientation. I’m tired now but wanted to say hi and show the view from the window behind my cubicle.

Not too shabby if you ask me.

My family finally emerged from the dark ages. The power is back on. The last to return was FIOS. So now we’re back on the grid with tv, telephone and most importantly internet!! Though I must admit, it was kind of nice without it for a change. The family spent a lot of time together. School is closed due to no power. Half the town is down. Can’t believe we had a snow day on Halloween! More later.

Is it really still October? We’ve been sitting without power since 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Hope the power comes back on soon. Getting chilly in the house.

I know. I had been posting regularly and then silence. Last week was a mess. Mom had cataract surgery on her left eye on Tuesday. She’s fine and quite pleased with her new vision. So I worked from home to help out on tues and weds, ‘cept I started with a miserable cold on Wednesday and spent the rest of the week sniffling. Still am actually but at least well enough to get back on the bus and head to work.
Yup I have been knitting. Finished those socks I last posted about and owe the details on. The kauni sweater is my evening baseball knitting. I started the corrugated ribbing of the first cuff last night. Let’s not discuss the Sox now. Ouch stupid Yankees. Stupid Os.
Anyway, current bus knitting is these socks. Details to follow

Have to show this. The neighbors had a garage sale this weekend. They sent Alex home with these:

Joy.

How I spent Saturday with Hurricane Irene. First, I finished up the current socks in progress. Then, I pulled out the Kauni cardigan. I made it past the start of the armholes and am making my way to the neckline. Getting there. This was all after making an emergency run to K(rap)Mart to get a stove top coffee pot just in case the power goes out. I must have my coffee.

Been an interesting week. First the earthquake (which I totally felt as I was sitting still at my desk at work when it happened. I initially thought someone had bumped my desk but no one was around. The next thought was subway except there is no real nearby subway to do that kind of shaking. After that my thoughts turned to construction except there has been construction nearby the building since I started this job without any kind of building shaking. Confused I spotted my California raised boss move to stand in his office doorway and then I knew what it was! Fun!) and now this storm of the century. So far so good but the worst hasn’t quite hit.
Hope everyone else is doing okay!
