Another Day

Another 24 hours later and here’s the sock…

2014-08-13 08.20.32

I’ve got two short rows left and the heel is done.   I’m trying something new for the heel.  This is the OMG Heel from Megan Williams.  SpinKnitLove inquired about the technique in yesterday’s comment and it seemed serendipitous considering I was about an inch shy of starting a heel.   Not sure how it fits yet, but I like the technique so far!  I love that there’s always more to learn in the fiber arts.

On another note, anyone know when AIG put their name back on their building?  I remember when the pulled it down in the midst of the financial crisis, but I’ve been out of lower Manhattan since June of 2011.  I noticed it on my way to the office sometime last week.

Same sock 24 hours later:

I’m about an inch shy of starting the short row heel.  Ah, it is good to be back.  I do think the next project is not going to be socks.  My niece has requested a sweater and I promised her one.  I think I’ll do Knit ‘n Tonic’s Swing Coat.  I made one for my little girl ages ago and even have more than enough of the same yarn left.  I was able to locate the yarn in stash and while I couldn’t find the electronic version of the pattern, I have the printed copy I used way back in ’05.  Glad I save the print outs!  I wasn’t eager to buy another copy.

Time to get some bugs out.

So I’ve been working in the city again now since May 19th.  I’ve now finished my fourth pair of socks since I’ve been back!  My train ride isn’t all that long, 30 min each way if I catch the express, with another 15 min on the ferry, but that’s 45 min I didn’t have at all when I was driving to work.  Here’s the pair I finished off on the boat Saturday:

To spice things up, I knit these cuff down with the flap heel!  Haven’t knit one of those in so long I had to look up a pattern.  The yarn is the June 2014 Into the Whirled club yarn.

This morning I cast on the next pair, also in Into the Whirled yarn, colorway is Mukhina.  Love the names that Cris comes up with.

By the time the ferry hit Wall Street, I’d finished the toe.

These socks need to be renamed the Screw Up Pair. First I made the second one 4 stitches too narrow. Needless to say that I had to rip it out as it did not fit Kathryn.   I just checked my progress on the now re-enter cuff to see how much further I had before starting the ribbing:

My thumb nail is where the ribbing began on the first sock. I know what I’m doing tonight.  Seriously you’d think that this was my first pair!

I’m totally enjoying my time off.  I definitely needed this week to do nothing, nothing work related anyway.  I’ve had social and fiber time for sure.

Monday I met Deb for lunch and knitting!  Managed to make a deal of progress on my handspun Caramel:

I’m about a centimeter or two from starting the ribbing at the bottom.  Maybe today, or not.  Doing a bit of running around today, unlike yesterday when I didn’t leave the house!  I was busy bonding with Pegasus.  She has sealed bearings on the bobbins like the Golding (and the Sabrina which has since moved along)..

I love the sealed bearings.  No need for greasing the shaft of the flyer.  No gunk on the hands when changing bobbins.  Smart engineering.

So what am I spinning on this?  A Loop batt that I picked up at MDSW.  Yes, this year.

Fiber is merino, bamboo, tussah and angelina in the Lights Out colorway for a total of 40z.   Yesterday morning I finished the first two ounces:

and went to work on the second 2.  I finished it last night.

I foresee plying in my near future!  Production wheel indeed!  Oh yes, I do like this wheel.

Off to get a pedicure!  Craft on!

Going for two

April 21st, 2014 · 2 Comments

Way back in the olden days, I used to post very regularly.  When I can stay on top of things, it is easier to stay up to date, the backlog/deficit doesn’t continue to grow and discourage me from posting.  So, now that I caught up, mostly, yesterday, I’m going to give regular posting a try again.  If anything it will serve as a distraction from work 😉

So yes, I have more cruise pictures.  This trip it was just the monkeys and me.  No grandparents along, just me spending more time with my kids than I have in a very long time.  It was pretty awesome (with some minor wrinkles).  We did things on the ship that we’ve not done in the past.  Yes, it was the same ship (Explorer of the Seas) that we’ve been taking year in and year out.  Its just to easy to drive the short distance to Bayonne, NJ and get on whatever ship is docked there.  In the past, and until November, it is the Explorer. Sooo…. we went ICE SKATING!  At sea.  Yes.  I haven’t been ice skating in over a decade and I know for sure, the rink wasn’t rocking gently either.  Woo boy.  The kids enjoyed it though 🙂

And yes, I really was on board.  Tough getting into the picture when you’re the one holding the camera most of the time.

We had a super awesome bonus of beautiful weather our last day at sea.  A day that is usually cold and has us hiding inside and mopey cause we’re going home, was warm with a wind directly behind us. That allowed us to go somewhere we’ve never been while underway – this is the edge of the helipad right up at the bow.   Notice how tall boy is getting.

Anyway….I think i finally have the perfect portable wheel.  I brought the Wee Robin with us in a 24″ hard sided suitcase.  I bought the wheel right before the trip and it arrived oh so timely.  I spun almost 8oz of fiber over the course of the cruise and had no issues with this wheel at all.  So much so that when we got back I sold the Cooper Sabrina.  She was a pretty little wheel, but I preferred the quicker setup/breakdown and the two treadles of the Wee.

The wheel lived on the coffee table tucked next to the TV at the end of the bed when she wasn’t in use.

And finally, I have yet another sweater on the needles.  This is my handspun yarn, that was done on the full sized Golding.  Fiber is Into the Whirled.  Natch.  I’m past the armpits and cruising along on the body.

Still Alive

April 20th, 2014 · 3 Comments

I know its been a while since I last posted. Stuff has been going on. Work hasn’t gotten any better and as a matter of fact it is gotten worse. Can’t go into details but it is what it is. The kids and I went on a cruise with stops in Nassau, where we did this at Atlantis

and Florida where we went to Disney.

I both bought another wheel and have sold one.  Both are in this picture 🙂

I finished a pair of socks:

Started a new pair:

And I’ve been spinning!

That should catch us up.  I’ll try and post more regularly now that I’ve caught up 😉

Stitch by Stitch

Not sure why I didn’t adopt the cafeteria at the office before for lunch, but I have now. The food is surprisingly good (today was teriyaki salmon) and it is plenty big and quiet. I have my kindle and my knitting.

The sock is growing nicely. Work is meh. I have an obnoxious coworker who makes me want to throat punch him. Most of the actual work is still good. I’m currently porting the iPad apps to Android. But this guy is making it tough to want to make this place my long term home. We shall see. Going on a cruise with the kids two weeks from Friday. Maybe a vacation with remove the knot from my chest and reduce the impulse to update my resume.

Still life

March 4th, 2014 · Comments Off on Still life

I had a nice normal length lunch today where I even got to knit! I’ve finished the first sock and now past the toe increases for its mate.

Why yes I do have a French press at the office. It makes a much better cup of coffee than the coffee maker here.
