While I wait for Knitpicks to get their heads out of their butts pack my order, I continue to work on Mr Not-So-Greenjeans. ¬†Anyone else notice the inordinate amount of time it takes for Knitpicks to grab a few skeins off the shelf and tuck into a box? ¬†I placed the order two days ago now and it is still pending. ¬†Really? ¬† ¬†That’s why I never pay for the “speedy” shipping from them cause it isn’t the shipping that’s the slow part, its the putting it in a box that is!

Okay, enough griping there, I have other things to keep my needles busy..

Mr. Not-S0-Greenjeans is now an inch shy of binding off the bottom hem. ¬†Here “he” is lounging on the ferry seat this morning:

I should be able to get that part finished today, if not on the way home, then definitely at SnB.  This morning in a fit of optimism, I dug out the extra long cable and the larger needle tips so I can get to work on the sleeves tonight.  Hehe.

Now if I should finish Mr. N-S-G before the yarn arrives from Knitpicks, there is another project that has me all eager. ¬†Didja all see ChicKnit’s newest design?

I lurve this look! ¬†I bought the pattern the day she announced it.. oh and then had a bit of a falling down at Colourmart and bought some 100% cashmere 8/28 in chocolate brown. ¬†The yarn arrived in yesterday’s mail 🙂 ¬†I’m still trying to decide which version I’m going to do first. ¬†A week ago when I placed the order, I was leaning towards the cardigan, but the last few days has me on the pulli. ¬† ¬†Whichever I do first, I’ll do the other in some stashed Lavold Silky Tweed.

So what do you all think of the every other day blogging? ¬†I think I like it better. ¬†I can actually post real progress shots and things have a better chance of changing over 48 hours. ¬†Real substance in posts rather than, “yeah here’s a picture of the additional inch I knit and oh yeah, nothing else”. ¬†What do you think?

Knitter Know Thyself

February 24th, 2009 · 4 Comments

I think by the time you’ve been knitting for over three decades (there I said it), you should really know what you like to knit. ¬†There has to be some accounting for the ebb and flow of the magical mojo or my sock and lace production wouldn’t change quite so drastically year (month) to year (month). ¬†Years with fewer socks and shawls usually see an increase in sweaters. ¬†Vice versa.

I always seem to hear the siren’s call of the lace shawl and socks regardless of what I’m working on and where the mojo level is. ¬†Doing some soul searching, it is because I like small needles and thin yarn. ¬†It shouldn’t come as a surprise that I jumped all over¬†Knit So Fine: Designs with Skinny Yarn when it came out. ¬†I have yet to make anything from it but while reading blogs today, and the accompanying time on Ravelry, I found something that just called out to me: ¬†Bohus Inspired Yoke Sweater(yes a Ravelry). ¬†

I’ve wanted to make a Bohus sweater for a while now, but the pricetag on the kits are daunting. ¬†That and the leeetle teeeny tiny needles and massive amounts of resulting knitting leads me to believe that “I’d never finish it and yet feel guilty for not because it was so pricey resulting in a less than enjoyable knit”. ¬†Whew. ¬†Soooo, when i saw this one, size 4 needles aren’t bad. ¬†Heck, I have a coupla sweaters on US4’s going now and this would be far less complicated! ¬†

Off to Knitpicks I went.  With the help of the suggestions they had in the project page, my handy-dandy install of Adobe Photoshop and JessaLu, I picked the colors I wanted.

KnitPicks Yarn - Bohus Inspired Sweater

KnitPicks Yarn - Bohus Inspired Sweater

This is a mix of the Gloss and Shaow laceweights.  The sweater is worked from hem to collar in the round with the colors progressing in the order above from left to right.    The body will be the Sterling (the light grey on the left).  The yoke will run from the:

Aegean –> Blue Bird –> Juniper Heather –>Chipotle–>Mango–>Hot Rod Heather

The whole thing is running under $45. ¬†Which is way way less than the kit. ¬†I haven’t ruled out one of the kits someday, probably as a reward for something. ¬†Maybe my 10th anniversary of quitting smoking or somesuch, but for now, I’m looking forward to this project with tiny needles and thin yarn, even if it is doubled!

Yes, Mr. Not-So-Greenjeans is progressing, but the big needles and heavy yarn are making my hands hurt 😉 ¬†I’m about 4″ into the cable/rib thing at the bottom. ¬†I need to either dig up a long knitpicks cable or a second set off tips in the right size (and no I didn’t order more along with my lace yarn!) so I can do the sleeves.

Two Sticks

February 22nd, 2009 · 10 Comments

Fortunately the creeping ick that passed through the house didn’t last through the weekend. ¬†Alex’s fever ended on Friday, figures because I took him to the pediatrician then. ¬†Saturday he was a little low key, which was all right be me. ¬†We took a pajama day and watched movies while I knit. ¬†After the monkeys went to bed, I watched The Other Boleyn Girl and finished Adamas which I blocked this morning:

I had my blocking supervisors to make sure all went well.

For some reason, I expected this shall to be smaller. No idea why, but I did.  I love it!  The pattern was easy to memorize and just looks very nice.  It reawakened my lace love and reminded me I have another lace project.  I pulled this one out again:

Wedding Ring Shawl

Wedding Ring Shawl

I managed to work 6 rows today and hope to do a few every day. ¬†This is a LONG TERM project, but it doesn’t have to be a forever one. ¬†

It was also time to return to Mr. Greenjeans, or in my case, Mr. Not-So-Greenjeans. ¬†I picked it up again late this afternoon while watching a hockey game. ¬†My Ex introduced me to the NHL when we were first dating and we regularly watched games throughout our relationship. ¬†Unfortunately our team is out of market. ¬†While I will root for the Devils as they are the local team, my heart belongs to the Boston Bruins. ¬†Guess this doesn’t come as a surprise with my avowed devotion to the Red Sox (3 days to the first spring training game!!!). ¬†G and I even went so far as to put up a satellite dish so we could watch our team play. ¬†When we split, he got the dish and I haven’t really kept up with the boys… or the rest of the NHL ¬†(with the exception of watching my fav player of all time win his first Stanley Cup after being traded to Colorado). ¬†

Now though, you don’t need a satellite dish to watch out of market games…

You just need a computer! ¬†I got an email last week from regarding the season subscription that was about to renew. ¬†They’ve packaged the remainder of the NHL season with it for an extra $25. ¬†SOLD. ¬†I have a lot of catching up! (Like when did Tampa Bay change their home uniforms to those dopey ones that say “BOLT” on them??)

Anyway, I made some serious progress on Mr. Not-so-Greenjeans:

Yup. ¬†I’m up to the cable rib portion at the bottom. ¬†Lurve the Malabrigo in the Buscando Azul. ¬†

I’ve stayed up way too last the last couple of nights so I think I’ll call it an early night,

F or F

Any reader of mine will know it is either feast or famine when it comes to my blogging. I can’t seem to actually stick to a posting routine and either go every day or have huge gaps between posts. ¬†One week or so isn’t huge but still, bigger than I would actually like. ¬†Odd thing too is that I uploaded photos on Monday and just now have the time and energy to write something.

While I do love 3 day weekends, and both the kids and I had Monday off for Presidents Day, they usually make me confused when the work week starts back up again. ¬†I’ve been completely lost as to what day it is. ¬†Compounding the problem is that I picked up a cold that has been making its way around and just about lost Wednesday with a fog on Thursday thanks to taking Nyquil. ¬†Last Saturday the girl had the fever and I stayed home with her as my father took the boy to a birthday party. ¬†She was better by the end of the weekend. ¬†The boy decided his turn was during the week. ¬†He’s been down for the past two days with a decent fever and congestion. ¬†I took him to the pediatrician this morning as strep has been making its way through their class just for precaution. ¬†The quick test was negative and go figure, he’s feeling better. ¬†

I’ve been knitting on the train, when not playing the Sims 2 on my MacBook (using Windows under Bootcamp). It might have the same crappy video card as the netbook (Intel GMA950), but it has a much better cpu and way more RAM so it runs better. ¬†The only down side is that when I created packages of the two locales (university dorm kid in one and her family in the other) the familial relationship, not to mention the kid’s engagement sort of got lost in the translation when I imported it to the Mac. ¬†I’ve been following Redshirt Knitting’s lead of trying for a generational thing. ¬†My college kid is only the B generation but since she isn’t technically part of the family now, and her father has the hots for her as a result of the technicality, I set the parents off to have another baby. ¬†I just hope they live long enough for second daughter to get old enough to avoid the Social Worker showing up when they croak 😉 ¬†¬†

But I digress, my train knitting has been Adamas.  I decided I wanted it finished before BSG comes to an end.  I want to wear it for the {sniff} finale.  I started the final repeat of chart 2 last night while watching a movie with the sickie.

That’s pretty much it for the knitting, except for the next installment on the travelling scarf. ¬†I sent one off on Tuesday and have the next one sitting next to me waiting for its turn. ¬†It has to go sometime next week. ¬†I should be able to get it done this weekend.

Last weekend I spent some quality time with my Womack Butterfly. ¬†It is the only way I ply these days. ¬†I’d amassed quite a few finished singles that needed to be plied. ¬†I in no way plied everything as I just remembered some stuff in the closet that is awaiting its turn. ¬†Oh well. ¬†Anyway here’s what I did:

358 yards BFL from Spunky Eclectic – 4oz in Winnipeg. ¬†I started this last weekend at Jessica’s spin-in and finished it Saturday.

Next up was some fiber that has been sitting around probably since the summer.  It is that blue-green merino that I bought at MDSW in May and paired up with some blue ashland bay merino.  I hope to make a cardi for my little man out of it.

680 yds Р8oz РMerino from Clover Leaf Farms in Jungle Fever plied with blue Ashland Bay merino.  Its not quite as yellow as this photo is reading.  The lighting in my room just sucks for pictures.  Both the Winnipeg and this were spun on the Ladybug.

Finally, I plied my second skein of yarn from the Van Eaton.  This is the Crown Mountain Farms stuff in Black Sun that I started a while back.

8oz Black Sun – Handpainted BFL – 846 yds

No idea what I’m going to do with that, but I should be able to find something 🙂 ¬†I still have the toasted banana Zarzuela Fibers lace weight going on the Reeves that I put some effort into this weekend as well. ¬†Someday I’ll have that ready to be plied. ¬†Can’t even begin to imagine the quality time I get with the Womack then! ¬†The Black Sun took about 2 hours to ply. ¬†That’s when I’m really glad I have the electric and the Woolee Winder on it!

That’s really about it. ¬†I’m juggling quite a few things at work: ¬†production problems, quick fixes, as well as some long term major development. ¬†It all serves to make the day interesting.

Have a great weekend.

This knitting mojo is a mysterious thing. ¬† I used to be a sock knitter. ¬†And a pretty productive one at that! ¬†But not recently, and certainly not over the last twelve months or so. ¬†Looking at my Ravelry projects, the last pair of handknitted adult sized socks where completed in May 2008. ¬†If memory serves, there is an undocumented pair of finished socks in STR Firebird that I knit while on that boating vacation. ¬†In June. ¬†They aren’t “technically” done as I haven’t woven in the ends yet. ¬†Yet. ¬†I know. ¬†

I’ve knit two pairs of shrimp girl socks, and cranked a pair or two, but that’s it. ¬†Sad. ¬†

I think i might just have my mojo back though.  I turned the heel on the Mini Mochi last night during the commute and hit the foot running this morning.

I did a few rows on my Mr. Greenjeans last night while watching ’24’ before moving back to the Ladybug to work on the second bobbin of the fiber I was spinning at Jessica’s on Saturday. ¬†I’m spinning some vintage roving that I picked up at MASW ’07.: ¬†4oz of handpainted BFL in Winnipeg from¬†Spunky Eclectic. ¬†I finished the first bobbin up on Saturday and have about an oz of fiber left to spin at this point. ¬†Makes for good TV work, and a WW activity point while I’m at it 🙂

Weekend Update

February 9th, 2009 · 12 Comments

Wow this weekend was one of those rare very busy ones. ¬†We had something to do both days. ¬†I’m tired, and honestly, ready for another weekend, but of the more low key kind 😉

Friday night, I did indeed finish Selbu Modern on the way home. I even worked in the ends before getting of the train.  Here she is, unblocked:

In an unusual occurrence for me, I actually blocked it Friday night as well. ¬† ¬†After struggling with my standard coffee can + socks/t-shirt/bag as a blocking method, I read the pattern instructions and went for the 10″ plate. ¬†Awesome idea!

I then put the plate on top of the coffee can and placed the works in front of the heating vent in my bathroom.  She was dry almost before I went to sleep after an awesome Battlestar Galactica episode!

(Tis hard to take a picture of yourself wearing a jaunty beret!) ¬†J’adore mon beret! ¬†

After finishing with the beret, I finally picked out my yarns for the sock yarn club. ¬†I only signed up for six months but have left open the options to extend for the remainder of the year. ¬†I did kind of rig the first package because I just received a yarn order and wanted to use that first, but I’ll let myself slide for that. ¬†I cast on Mini Mochi in the blue (108) colorway, using the freebie pattern from Socks a la Carte (c’est une Ravelry link)! I then proceeded to order the
book. ¬†I had finished the upper cuff portion before heading out to the first event of the weekend, a birthday party for one of the twins’ classmates. ¬†I got to wear my new beret and was ablet to knit for 90 minutes while the kids ran around. ¬†It was nice. ¬†Here’s where the sock is now (after more knitting time yesterday)..

The yarn is super soft, but is a single, that is loosely plied. ¬†Its alot like knitting with Noro, but way softer. ¬†I’m using a US0, primarily because the pattern is 64st and with my wee feet, that’s the only way they’re going to fit. ¬†I think I’d normally use a 1 for this yarn.

After dropping the kids at the house, I ran to Jessica’s for her monthly fiber gathering. ¬†I spent a few hours amongst the similarly afflicted 🙂 ¬†I then got a bonus of having dinner with Tina and Jessalu at what they redundantly call a “Greek Diner”. ¬† I always have camnesia at these events. ¬†Not sure why but I do.¬†

Yesterday, Sandi, Kim and I went bowling along with Liam and the twins.

Sandi took the picture, which is why she’s not here. ¬†Ignore the lady to my left as she’s just an innocent bystander. ¬†Why are we standing outside? ¬†Because of this:

Yeah. ¬†Just after I threw my first ball, the fire alarm sounds and they announce a “fire drill”. ¬†The building emptied into the parking lot. ¬†In my book, when they turn up in the gear, it ceases to be a fire drill, but that’s just me! ¬†It was a false alarm and we were allowed back inside to finish up. ¬† I’m pretty sure a good time was had by all. ¬†Sandi and I returned to my house where we played a few games of Wii bowling with the monkeys.

Whew.. I’m beat!

Not Quite

It was wishful thinking to hope that I’d finish Selbu Modern last night at SnB. ¬†I came close but didn’t quite get there. ¬†I did transfer to DPN’s first thing this morning on the train…

This is how the hat stands now. ¬†I’m feeling pretty confident that I can finish it on the way home tonight as I have a measly 4 more rounds to complete. ¬†I’ll block it tonight so I can wear it tomorrow 🙂 ¬†I have an excellent hat blocking spot in my bathroom, right in front of the heating vent. ¬†¬†

Not much else today beyond the joy that is Friday.

OMG. ¬†It is COOOOOOLLLLLDDDD outside. ¬†Heck, it isn’t overly warm today in the office, either that or I’m still frozen from the commute. ¬†Brrr. ¬†I don’t think this winter is ever going to end. ¬†The thermometer in my car read 14F when I took the kids to school. ¬† That’s way way below my 80F comfort level 😉

Enough bitching about this endless winter, I’m still constantly amazed at how much I can get done if I actually concentrate on a project.

This is my Selbu Modern as it stands now. ¬†I took this picture on the ferry this morning. ¬†I might not have mentioned this, but I’m knitting it in Koigu. ¬†Yum. ¬†The band was on US0 and the rest has been on US2 16″ addi’s. ¬†It has progressed far enough that I was able to try the band on the noggin without all the stitches falling off the needles last night. ¬†A little tighter than I’d like but I think it should block out fine. ¬†

I had to put it aside last night during the ride home. ¬†Yesterday must have been overly stressful as I didn’t have enough brain cells left to concentrate on two color stranding. ¬†I played The Sims on my netbook instead. ¬†That is why I carry multiple things to do. ¬†I shouldn’t be bored during my commute 😉

I’m sort of hopeful that I can get this hat finished tonight at SnB. ¬†I’m only a couple of rounds shy of the decrease so it is possible. ¬†I tucked my size 2 DPNs in my bag just in case. ¬†

Now this really makes this mother kvell. ¬†I’ve been meaning to show this picture to you for a couple of days, but you know how it goes…

Yes, that is my son, and yes, he is knitting.  ALL. BY. HIMSELF!!!  I know!

That was while my folks were on the cruise. ¬†Sunday evening, date must be 1/18, after a long day, I sat down with the kids to watch some tv before bed. ¬†I pulled out my knitting to relax and that’s when Kat declared the she wanted to knit too. ¬†I dug out her project bag and she got busy. ¬†That was when Alex decided that he really wanted to learn to knit too. ¬†Ways back I bought two sets of the shorter Lion Brand kid needles. ¬†Kat is using her and Alex decided they made far better weapons than instruments and as such, they’ve been misplaced for a while now. ¬†Kat generously donated her project for her brother to learn on. ¬†I know, she can be surprisingly nice when she isn’t being a beast 😉

Anyway, I sat him in my lap, held his hands as we went through the knitting steps. ¬†While I knit continental (and in the other direction from right needle to left), I’ve been teaching them the english/wrap method and in the standard direction. ¬†When they have better coordination and fine motor skills, we’ll work on coverting to continental, but for right now, it is easier. ¬†After maybe a row or two of garter stitch with no more than 30st each row, he declared that he knew how to do it but gave the project back to Kat.

The following day was MLK Day and I had off from work.  I took a trip to Michaels after dropping them at daycare and picked him up his very own needles and  a skein of Patons to work with.  That night, I gave him a quick review and he set off on his own as you see above.

And just to show I still knit, here’s the progress on my beret:

At some point last night I decided that while hand piecing quilting bits is nice and authentic, it was using up my precious train/ferry knitting time. ¬†Not to mention that I lost my leather thimble on the train last night. ¬†Something less likely to happen when knitting on the train (though we won’t mention the dpn I lost in the escalator at the Secaucus Train Station a few years back). ¬†And factor in that I have another kit to make for Alex, and have now cut for a throw for myself, if I handpiece all of this, I’ll never get anywhere. ¬†I’ll still hand quilt, but the piecing I think is better done in a few nights on my nifty Singer rather than a few months on the train, and this way I’ll still get some knitting done 😉
