The ramblings of a fiber-affected single mother of twins who makes a living as a code monkey

One Crazy Fiber Lady

Quiet != Good

February 14th, 2008 · 20 Comments

For the non-code peeps,¬† that roughly translates to “Quiet is not Good”.¬†

I don’t know why, but I’ve been seriously slow in learning that lesson.¬† Especially when applied to children being quiet.¬†¬†¬† Thanks to the weather, I worked from home yesterday.¬† And since I was such a chicken about driving, I didn’t really want to take the youngin’s out either.¬† So they stayed home too and played.

Late morning they had disappeared into Alex’s room and mom reported they were watching tv in there.¬† They weren’t killing each other and were blessedly quiet.¬† I know.¬† My first tip off.¬† A while later I walked by and saw Alex giving a toy duster a trim.¬† Messy but not really a problem.¬† I told him to quit it.¬† Quick motion by the girl child who spun around and sat on the floor.¬†¬†¬† When queried as to what she was doing, she replied with “Nothing” and the innocent but not innocent smile.¬†

A little prodding produced a small pile of hair on the floor tucked under her and her tush length hair¬†somewhat more ragged looking than normal.¬†¬†¬† This was the day that I’d been dreading and hoping wouldn’t happen.¬† You see, she’s never had a haircut other than my trimming her bangs.¬†¬†¬† Can’t say that anymore…

Kat's first haircut
This was Kat’s handiwork.¬† Note the small section that still reaches the chair and beyond.¬† We called that stuff her baby hair.¬† The waves are from the braids I put this stuff into every night as it knotted terribly.¬† The baby hair didn’t help there.¬†¬† I’ve been meaning to give her a trim, but seriously, not this much!¬† Anyway, after lunch, I evened her out a bit…

Kat's first haircut

That’s 8″ long.¬† I now have it in a rubberband and tucked away.¬† One bath and hairwashing later, I trimmed better as the braid waves were gone.¬† Here’s my little girl now.

Kat's first haircut

It looks cute and yes, took less time to do, but I miss the long hair.¬† As she told me yesterday amidst her tears “It will grow back”.¬†

Do I need to mention that today is picture day at school?

Craft on!

Oh dear….. Well, join the club. :-)

At least she didn’t trim off a big chunk right around her face! What she has left still looks pretty long to me. Especially since she’s a teeny little thing!

Isn’t that a law with children or something? They only destroy themselves when picture day follows??

When I was four I had long ringlets…think Shirley Temple. I cut one side down to the scalp and handed out curls to all the boys in the neighborhood. Don’t be too mad at Kat! And her hair looks very cute!

My oldest boy did something when he was about 4 that we still laugh about today. One day I noticed that our particularly amenable cat looked odd. I couldn’t figure it out right away, but finally, I noticed that he had no whiskers! Our son took some manicure scissors and trimmed them all off.

Twins are fun, aren’t they? Mine are 11 now and act like an old married couple. The girl twin is always telling my boy twin what to do, etc.

Aww. While I understand the sentimentality of her hair not being cut, at least she didn’t do more damage than that. She is still beautiful for her school picture. They won’t be taking a picture of her from behind. :-)

It seems to happen to at least one child in every family. megan has done it several times. Even after I took all siccors away she manges to cut her hair in front and cut the dogs short lab hair too. Does she have the urge to draw on the walls?

Oh the mischief. Awww. You gotta let go of the baby hair sometime. And really her hair looks so nice cut shorter. It’s still long hair. Be glad she was cutting the back and not the front. Imagine how awful it would be to have it butchered to the hairline in front (as my cousin did. She looked freakish for the longest time). My nephew recently took his dad’s beard trimmer and shaved himself a receding hairline. Now I look just like Dad! he said.

Doesn’t every little girl do that at some point? I know I did–I cut the ends of my ponytails off, remember clearly looking in the mirror, holding my head straight, to make sure they were the same length on each side . . . without realizing that when the elastics came out it would look much, much different! At least Kat just took off the ends . . . it does still count as long, just not AS long, but I know how attached she was to her long hair. This is obviously the hard lesson to learn–that if you want long hair, you can’t have the fun of cutting it off….

Oh! A girly milestone. I know a 20-something that still does that – cuts her beautiful long hair, then cries. There’s nothing like the first time.

At least she didn’t do what I did at that age – decide I needed bangs and took the scissors to a clump of hair right at the front as close to the scalp as I could. I’m pretty sure that was the last ‘haircut’ I got till I was 12.

oy… she obviously wanted a new look for picture day. Yep thats it. she is a mischievous one huh??

We call that “random acts of silence.” Be very afraid.

She looks great. Congrats on the milestone, even if it wasn’t planned.

Oh Riza!! Peanut had her first haircut a year ago and it was so hard to do. Then, in the Fall, she gave herself a trim at school. A nice big chunk about eye level next to her face. Oh and when she did that, she was nice enough to cut the hair of her little gentleman friend as well! I kept her big ponytail to put in her keepsake box too. It was so, so hard to cut those ringlets off!

Still laughing at Marcia handing out her curls to the boys! The firsts of everything are hard esp baby hair. I hate to say it, but based on the comments above it could have been worse. Yes, silence is usually involves some form of naughtiness….. I shaved half of my eyebrow off because I thought that it wouldn’t work without soap and water. This was done just before the family was supposed to go out to a restaurant in our hotel. I spent the evening with my hand firmly glued to that side of my face.

  • 16 Hillary // Feb 15, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Oh no, I guess that’s a right of passage for all little girls. It could always be worse. When my sister was about 3 or 4 she had gorgeous, long, wavy, blonde hair until I cut one pigtail off one day. My mom freaked out!

oh…oh, dear. Well, at least she left you with some length to work with. ;o)

Ah, that last line makes the story. OF COURSE it was the day before picture day!

Ooops! Been there! My DD cut hers this past year. It was actually pretty cute, but I didn’t tell her that. Didn’t matter. Our friends and neighbors kept saying, “I like your haircut!” Geesh! Don’t encourage this behavior, people!

    Anyhoo, it grows back.

I can help but laugh. When my twins were about that age Richard cut the front of Andrea’s hair. I can still remember Andrea sitting in one of their little chairs and Richard wih the scissors in his hands and that was over twenty years ago. Hey maybe you can spin her hair into yarn.
