April Showers

April 22nd, 2007 · 7 Comments

Well it is definitely spring in northern NJ finally.  It was gorgeous for my sister’s baby shower yesterday.  The sweater was warmly received.  My sister told me that I was "getting really good" at the knitting thing ;)

Today, after sitting in the backyard knitting a sock (lornas lace shepherd in black purl) dad suggested we take the monkeys over to see Great Falls in Paterson.  With the 8 inches of rain that the nor’easter dumped on us Sunday/Monday, causing the Passaic River to seriously flod, the falls would probably be an awesome site.  Dad was right.  We’ve been going there periodically since I was a kid and I’ve never seen it as powerful as today.  In contrast, if I remember correctly, the last time I visited it was during a drought.  Amazing.

Rather than bore ya’ll with photos of finished socks (yup, I correctly predicted that the trekking ones would be finished Friday night) I thought I’d show you photos of the falls instead.

That’s little Miss Kat standing there seeing the falls for the first time.

Here’s what it looked like without the fence in they way.

Finally, I made use of the movie feature on my elph and took this less the fabulous but you get the idea movie.

We had lunch at the local hot dog joint and while Kat is sleeping, Alex is sugared up on the Skittles his grandpa let him have.  I’m going to join Kat in the nap thing.  I’m pooped out!

Craft on.

How kind of your sister!! (grin) I suppose that’s the problem with knitting for non-knitters. It’s not that they don’t appreciate it, but they have no real concept of what’s hard and what’s not! But yes, you couldn’t have gotten better weather!

I remember going there after Clifton flooded in the mid 80′s. The creeks that fed into the Passaic flooded and the Passaic itself was about a foot over. The falls were similar to what you saw today. It’s amazing that the second largest falls in North America are where they are!

I’ve never been to the falls, but I’ve been wanting to go for the past couple years (I never knew about them until 2 years ago and I grew up in NJ!) Amazing video! Huge falls! Wow. You’ll have to tell me the hot dog place. Is is better than Rutts Hut?

Well I guess coming from a muggle that’s a pretty good complement ;o)

    Love the pictures!

You’ve been so busy and the kids have gotten so much bigger!

Great pictures of the water falls.

Glad the sweater was well received (if not with a little good natured… dare I type it… ribbing! ;) ). I still can’t believe how much of a mess things still are in NJ. The pics and video of the falls just bring it all home even more.

Teehee. My sisters actually prefer storebought (gasp!), so I don’t bother anymore.

Wow, the Falls are smoking! I’ve never seen them that full. Miss Kat seems appropriately cautious. Her hair looks gamine and, more important, tangle-proof, just perfect for summer.
