I can't imagine that you would need (or want) to go to the bigger size. Slightly bigger needle maybe? Sure, but you'd be swimming in the 40". One thing I did do, though? Pulled out several of my favorite sweaters from my closet and measured them to see what I was actually wearing, not just what size *I* was. Hope your commute was a good one!
