Risa, I purchased the cheapest Bernina serger about 5 years ago and it has paid for itself over and over. It cuts my sewing time in half. don't hesitate, you will love it.

Yes, a serger is a nice tool to have. I have a 5 thread Elna, but I think a 4 thread would have been sufficient. It is nice having all those nicely finished seams. Did you try a zigzag stitch on your flannel?

Yup, good serger and good manufacturer. Assuming you got a good price (and I can't imagine otherwise) you got the right one. Good job! Enjoy it, I love mine. :)

I can't say I'm the least bit surprised to hear about the serger. (And I'm wondering if you were thinking of me when you named this entry?) As to knitting machines, I have one of those Bond/Incredible Sweater ones, but never got past the swatch-making stage before I got frustrated and returned to my needles. (Well, that, and I got tired of seeing it clamped on the side of the table without doing anything!) But, yeah, I'd say the cheaper serger would do you fine--even if it only lasts a few years, you'd know by then if you'd get any real use out of a more expensive model.

I have had a White serger for years. It's one of those things I don't use very often but when I do, it's just priceless. My sewing machines are both Husquvarna's and I'd recommend them in a heartbeat but the White serger is great. Baby Lock is also very good but probably more $$ than you want to spend right now. A key feature is how easy it is to thread because that can be a major pain. You sew clothes quite a bit and I think you'd really find a serger to be useful!

Thanks for the info on knitting machines. I'm teetering on the brink of getting one, but just not sure. The serger you linked to is a great one to start with....will wait to see what you post tomorrow.

I have been tempted to buy a serger for years, as a weaver they are so handy.

In my past life, I was a production knitter for a high end boutique, using a bulky. It was such tedious work, that I haven't pulled my bulky out for a few years.....maybe someday ;-)

Hope you don't mind a first time commenter adding her .02 worth on sergers and flannel. As a quilter, seamstress, knitter and mom, I enjoy your blog quite a bit. Personally, I do not think you really need a serger to work with flannel for quilting. It has more to do with the quality of the flannel than the machines you use. Some flannels are just flimsy and shred easily. Now a serger has a place...garment finishing, home dec stuff, accessories would be the reasons to dash out and get one. If you feel you want one, the Brother you linked to is a great place to start. As with all hobbies, start with a mid-price tool that will both get you started and still have features that will encourage you to grow.
Happy crafting!
