I didn’t make my quotas on the baby gift this weekend. I do have a good excuse though. Friday afternoon on the way home from work, mind planning my bonus afternoon thanks to summer hours at the office, I missed a step in the long flight down from the train station near my home. I immediately went down, clutching my right ankle. A few fellow commuters and all around good people stopped and helped me. One called the police, another went running for ice at a local store and then put her hat on my head to protect from the blazing sun. A wait of 45 minutes on the hard concrete and an ambulance arrived to take me to the hospital. The PA who checked me out initially ordered X-rays which thankfully didn’t reveal the three different breaks that the physical exam possibly indicated. They gave me an aircast, a quick lesson on crutches and ordered a follow up with an orthopaedist in a week for my badly sprained ankle. I’m non-weight bearing and hobbling around on the crutches. I have an appt with ortho tomorrow at 11:15, a doc that most of my family has been to at one point or another (dad for his broken ankle, ex-hubby with his broken hip) so I trust him. I had a minor crutch accident on the front steps on Monday, instintively put my foot down and nearly crawled out of my skin with the pain in the foot and the middle of my lower leg. Swell. Half a percocet later, some ice and a nap and I was better.
Crutches and toddlers just don’t mix well. Fortunately, I have the coolest folks in the world who without a thought cancelled their vacation plans (they were supposed to take their boat up to Lake Champlain starting this Friday for a 9 day trip) and had the monkeys and I move in. They’ve been a great help in caring for the twins. To add to the fun, Kat has been running a fever on and off for the last couple of days and now Alex has a pretty bad diaper rash. It has been an interesting weekend. As a good blogger, I did take a picture of my bruised and swollen foot while I sat in the wheelchair at the hospital waiting for the X-Ray results, but unfortunately, I’m on my work laptop and can’t upload the photos yet. I’ll give an update tomorrow after the dr’s appointment. It’s always something isn’t it.
So that’s my tale of woe and why I haven’t been knitting. I’m so worn out from trying to deal with the twins, work from home, crutching around and the discomfort in the foot that I’ve fallen way behind in my quota. I did knit in the hopsital though and managed some 1000 stitches while waiting (oh and before the percocet took me away). So no grocery shopping. No visit to the pool. No going to the post office and getting the packages off to Laurie, Katy, Cate and my secret pal. Not to mention, Deb and I won’t be checking out Nonna’s Yarn Cafe this coming weekend as we’d planned.
Feh.
Craft on.

I am so sorry you hurt your ankle…and so glad you have helpful parents!
I just don’t know how you do it all…I know I couldn’t do it. Hope the appointment with the ortho goes well….sending good vibes in your direction.

Sorry to hear about your ankle. Hopefully the doc will give you good news tomorrow. I understand being on crutches and having small children. I spent last summer hobbing around with a walker while being non-weight bearing, then onto crutches when I started weight bearing. It’s not fun trying to keep up with 1 child much less twins. Hang in there and keep us posted.

Hey -
I just got over a very badly sprained ankle… after reading your message – I’m so glad I did the damage in my house! I didn’t even think about how horrible it would have been if I was out and about.
Elevate and ice, baby.

Ugh. What a huge (and painful) drag. Thank goodness you have some folks to help you out! I often wonder what would happen to my family functioning if I was to get hurt…but then I quickly try to think of something else.
Hope the ankle is better soon and that you can resume some summer fun.

Oh my! I am sooo sorry about the pain (head and ankle)… and the fever … and the rash! No fun at all for anyone in your house.
Quotas be damned. Take care of yourself, try to stay comfortable and try to stay sane!

Ouchie Mama. I was on crutches for 2 weeks in March. Toby was so helpful – in response to his many requests for me to fetch him things, I guess he got tired of me saying “I can’t honey, it’s hard for me to walk right now.” He replied “Well just use your canes mama.” Takes a mobility-impaired kiddo to say it like it is LOL. BUT – that says nothing about your pain – oh my. Speedy healing vibes are heading your way.

So sorry about your ankle. A badly sprained ankle sometimes takes longer to heal than a break. Keep it iced and elevated. Hope you’re soon on the mend!
We met at Stephanie’s book signing breakfast at MS&W and I’ve been following your blog since!

Oh, you didn’t tell me about Kat and Alex, too. Sheesh! Hopefully you’ll at least feel better on Friday . . . And those packages? USPS.com. You can ship, print the label and postage, and then request a pickup with your next mail delivery. All online. VERY helpful!

I’m so sorry you are injured! I know exactly what you are going thru, minus twins, and I CAN’T IMAGINE how you can cope. I hope that they give you weight bearing sooner rather than later. The post office can clearly wait.

ow ow ow! Been there, done that well and truly on both ankles, thank heavens not at the same time! Never had crutches though, just hobbled lots and liked going to the supermarket cos then I could lean on the trolley…
Hope you get better soon and the monkeys don’t knock you off your crutches!
